Dalmation Female Yes 1 and a half yrs dogproblem: To who it may concern,
I have a female
dalmation since she was a puppy. She is crate trained but I have not been able to completely house break her. I think it is
my elderly mother fault because when I am at work she will leave the dog loose in the house and not watch her. When I am home
I can watch her and make sure she goes outside often and she is fine. When I go to work as soon as she is with my mother
she goes on the carpeting. I decided that she needs to be with someone more consistant for her and she would be a good dog.
She is excellent with kids, very loving and protective. I need to find a good home with a fenced in yard. Please let me know
if you can help?
Hello Elizabeth,
I think you have describe the problem very well. Consistency is very important and given that your mother cannot
provide consistency while you are away it is resulting in this problem. I do not find home for dogs I just try to keep them
with their owners. A couple of suggestions. Develope a system where your dog does not need to rely upon your mother to manage
the dog. If you have yard you build a kennel outside where the dog could be managed. That way you can have the consistency
of the dog inside while you are there and the dog would be outside while you are gone. I also have a system where the dogs
can stay in the garage and then go outside into the yard when they need to. There are portable kennel panels that you can
purchase. If you have a yard then maybe a doggie door is all you need. My guess is your dog is not getting let out when it
communicates the need to go. If you had a doggie door your dog would probably choose to go outside and not have to rely upon
your mother to do that. The alternative is keeping things statue quo for a little bit. My guess is your mom uses the dog for
companionship while you are away. I am not sure how much longer this situation will be for you but you should be able to retrain
the dog if it lasts another year. Just a thought. If you think you need to find another home, talk with your local ASPCA or
there are breed specific rescue groups that find new homes for dogs. Any more question do not hesitate to ask. Regards

Yorkie
15 months male not neutered, but testicles have not descended
I bought him when he was about 10 months old.
dogproblem: Sweet Pea will go potty outside and still come in and go somewhere
and potty when I am not looking. If I take him somewhere new he will go just
about anywhere in someones house or at work, wherever! I wanted a little guy
that I could take places with me. Can you help me?
Hello Debbie,
First off you are not alone with this issue. It is common with these smaller
dogs and you have to work at potty training harder. But if you don't get a handle on it now it can become a chronic problem.
First
off you need to crate train the dog. There is a section on the website that deals with this. The benefit is that a dog usually
will do anything not to potty in its bed. Also it gives you a place to put the dog when you are not paying attention to him.
The key to potty training is understanding when your dog is trying to communicate with you to go outside to use the bathroom.
At first it is understanding the body language when the dog is about ready to go to the bathroom and you move it outside.
You have to watch it 100% of the time because if you miss it 20% of the time it makes it harder for the dog to learn.
You must associate going outside and going potty with rewards and good-boys and love. You must also react to the dog when
it needs to go in the crate, crying to pee is good.
You also must be able to predict when the dog needs to go and provide the
best place for it. Dogs use the bathroom after they eat, after they wake-up and at certain intervals depending on their size.
Small dogs with small bladders need to go more.
There also appears to be some other issue here, try keeping the pooch
on leash at home for a couple of weeks. When not on leash then in the crate. This will improve communication. Also this will
help when you take the dog out, you must watch the dog and recognize before he pees that he is going to pee, or he will
ware out his welcome.
There is a lot to cover but if you have any more question let me know. Look for an obedience
class, your vet should have a referral.

wheaten terrier
no- 1 week
dogproblem: She barks and whines whenever she is in her crate. I have given
her treats for going in and don't let her out when she whines.
She also refuses to walk! I have to drag her to go on walks.
Hello Abbey, give it some time. We are looking at a few weeks of consistency for dogs to learn something.
Just ignore the barking and whining. Wait for those times when the dog quiets down to let him out. When you let
him out do it in a very quiet manner. Try only giving treats in the crate, it is designed to be a place of comfort for
the dog. Sometimes some quiet music of a TV gong will calm the dog. But look for those quiet moments to let him
out. Eventually you can get to the place where you give a reprimand for the noise. In your note you did
not indicate age/sex etc. so I am not sure where they are at. But give it time and patience and forgiveness. Eventually
you will want to teach your dog to bark and to stop barking but this will need to be done outside of the crate.
